If you feed any of your animal companions jerky treats - please read this news alert from the Veterinary Information Network (VIN): news.vin.com/VINNews.aspx?articleId=19077Excerpt from the article: "....Kristin McEvoy, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, said last week that the association in the past month received about a dozen reports of dogs that had eaten various brands of chicken jerky developing a kidney disorder mimicking the genetic disease Fanconi syndrome. The cases occurred across the country: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, McEvoy said, and involved dogs small and large, from shih tzus to retrievers. The development of Fanconi-like syndrome in dogs associated with consumption of chicken jerky is new in Canada but has been ongoing in the United States since fall 2007. ..." Tressie

i wonder if maybe it is because the chicken jerky treats are generally made in china? they don't really have the strictest of rules over there... i used to get iorek chicken jerky treats at the super store in the organic section thinking i was doing so good. yeah right. they said made in canada (or something to that effect) on the bag but if you read the small print it said that they were actually made in china. i generally make my own treats for the dogs and i feed them raw. i just can't take the chance since it seems that there is always something. i would feed everyone raw if i could but the cats said no way and i am nervous about the ferrets since i can't get reliable chicks/mice. at least i feed a food made by a canadian company. i feel much better feeding a canadian made product.
