Cannoli
Cannoli peered intently into the water, Tiramisu at his side. He was searching for his human mother to let her know that he had made it and was finally reunited with his beloved companion Tiramisu.
Cannoli and Tiramisu had made the long journey from the MaFF shelter to their forever home in Nova Scotia, Canada in April 2007.
Cannoli’s grief was inconsolable when his precious Tiramisu departed for the Rainbow Bridge in October 2008. She was barely 2 years old and had succumbed to an aggressive lymphoma. Cannoli rolled himself up in her blankie and cried, plummeting into a deep grief for 3 days. The wise Alpha Linguini, lay at his side consoling the grief-stricken ferret. Mama worried that Cannoli would soon join his companion.
On Day 3 tiny Tortellini jumped vigorously onto the lump in the blanket.
“Git up!” She called out!
Cannoli stirred slightly beneath the cloth.
“Git up, git up, git up….” Tortellini pounced again and again and again.
Cannoli’s nose poked from under the blanket, eyes half-closed. The Alpha watched carefully, dooking to herself quietly.
“Cannoli – I be here ‘n Linguini ‘n Dolcezze be here – we luvs U – now… GIT UP.” Tortellini pounced once more.
Cannoli shot from under the blanket and gave chase….
On September 10, 2009 Linguini’s breathing shallow, heart failing was slipping away Cannoli had been steadfastedly at her side all week not wanting to let her go.
Cannoli’s big heart broke for a second time…. Tortellini and Cannoli consoled one another in their time of grief and loss.
January 20, 2011…. Tortellini sadly bid the heartbroken Cannoli farewell as she left to join her companion Linguini.
Cannoli didn’t know if his heart could take another blow….. Dolcezze his steady friend nudged his companion and the boys curled up together. Tortellini had been a mentor to Dolcezze teaching him her mischievous ways. At almost seven she had barely slowed down until the pneumonia struck, recovery had been difficult…. Now her kidneys were failing….
The Ides of March, on a dark and dreary March 15th, 2011 Cannoli sniffed Dolcezze’s comatose frame. Dolcezze had been passing blood for several hours – his doctor was away and no other doctor would see him. Mama was angry at the gods and cursed compassionless veterinarians…. heartbroken…. she kept Dolcezze as comfortable as possible, given his condition, held him in her arms and waited for him to cross over.
Cannoli checked in on Dolcezze regularly and knew he was departing this world. Another heartbreak to come… The end came early in the dark morning hours…. Cannoli licked Dolcezze’s cold ear and slumped beside him.
“Mama…. I be tiwed,” Cannoli deeply sighed. “I miss evrybudy,” Cannoli looked up into her eyes. Mama sadly nodded, understanding more than he could possibly know.
Mama heard the distance fluttering of pink wings and knew it would soon be time….
On May 15th, 2011 5 year-old Cannoli at last left with his beloved companion Tiramisu for the Rainbow Bridge….
The woman quietly wept for the big boy with the sensitive heart - who had always been closest to her own heart.
