There it was again – a shadow of a furry presence dashing across the floor. The woman sighed and smiled - sadly. The presence was unmistakable. It was Linguini – the Supreme Alpha. She had crossed over to Rainbow Bridge in September 2009. She had come because the woman had called to her, to give comfort to her bonded earthly companion Tortellini.
Tortellini was approaching her 7th year of life and recently had begun the fading that comes with impending transition from this realm into the next.
Tortellini developed pneumonia in September, a year after her companion had departed for the Bridge and the woman almost lost her then. But tiny Tortellini rallied and got better…. For a little while longer.
The woman flashed back in her mind to those two feisty ferrets running across the floor at the MaFF shelter in Bedford, MA. They weren’t the ones who the Shelter Director had chosen for the family seeking their first fuzzbutts. But it was unanimous, the three who came agreed that the two little females had won their hearts.
Tortellini and Linguini travelled in the cloth carrier 2 ½ hours across the state to their new home in the island community. The woman had done her research for many months but even she was surprised that the two little weasels had managed to shred the inner lining of the carrier during that exciting journey. The woman smiled at the memory…
‘The girls’ they came to be known with great fondness. Linguini - a chocolate sable with her calming wise presence and Tortellini - a hooded sable with keen intelligence and an adept propensity for getting into places no ferret had tread before her. They bonded profoundly to the woman who loved them deeply. They shared their love freely.
The girls kept the woman sane when her world fell apart and she had to depart for Canada. The journey that time was considerably longer.
The girls showed the woman the love and mutual respect that can grow between humans and ferrets.
The girls introduced their kind to the woman and were soon joined by two more who travelled from MaFF and the following year, another three travelled north.
And so the fur family grew and a rescue organization was born, where none had been before bringing foster brothers and sisters to the fur family home. The rescue organization spread across four provinces in Atlantic Canada and provided homes for many. More MaFF adoptees came north to homes in Canada. More rescues found comfort and safety.
Tortellini was the tiniest ferret the woman had ever known ….the smartest… and the longest lived.
But sadly, now Tortellini was disappearing literally overnight. The woman winced when she gently picked up the little ferret to give her the feed of duk soup that sustained her. She was amazed that the protruding bones did not cut through the pelt softly draped over them. The woman gently ran her finger over the ribs, one by one, the delicate bones of the feet.
Tortellini took a sip and ground her teeth loudly while the woman held her protectively. The powerful medications were no longer working.
Tortellini paused and glanced back at the woman. The razor intelligence still shone brightly in her dark, pain-filled eyes. However, the look was one of love …. A visual kiss sent to the woman whose heart was now slowly breaking. Tortellini turned back to painfully sipping her soup, her frail body craving its soothing nutrition.
The ghostly flash of fur ran over the woman’s foot again. Grateful – she smiled sadly. It was time to release Tortellini into the care of the Supreme Alpha who would guide her back to her former playmates who were waiting for her at the Bridge and would share her hammock for eternity.
“Her wings will be blue,” whispered the black-nosed ferret with pink wings into the ear of the woman, who pressed her lips for the last time onto the furry head of her beloved companion.
