Trying to figure out how to post an ad in the Bulletin Board section...Just registered on this site but couldn't fin info. on how to make comment. Looking for Ferret cage to house our 5 pet rats...prefer multi-floored cage, reasonably priced, easy to clean cage. Will have to pay for postage to have sent to Newfoundland where we live. Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section. Thanks.

Thanks for the help from Tressie and Purple Ferret. Much appreciated but no luck on the online sites as yet. the postage IS going to kill me. Most sites don't ship to Canada and if they do from the US- it is much too expensive.

Hi Christina,
I am assuming the cage you bought was not a ferret cage? Rabbit cages have bars spaced pretty close together and generally work. What was the cage you bought?
Do you have a room that you can ferret proof? A spare bedroom or your bedroom to keep him in until you can get an appropriate cage?
You should be able to return the cage since it is obviously not suitable for a ferret or sell it for close to what you paid for it.
Your local SPCA may be willing to trade a used cage for a new one. If there are any animal rescues in your area you may also arrange a trade.
As a temporary measure you could keep him in a smaller cage or larger carrier (dog or cat carrier/kennel). If you don't have air conditioning I would forego the carrier since that may get too hot for him. You'd have to put a litter box, hammock, water bottle and food bowl in it.
Perhaps someone on this board in NL has a spare cage they could loan you. There are several people who post here from NL.
That really is too bad that whoever you bought him from didn't advise you better on the type of cage you should have bought. Was this a pet store that sells ferrets?
Good luck!
Tressie

This may or may not be too useful, because it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
When hubby and I wanted to build our cage, we spent some time looking for materials. One day we were at a "garage sale" for an out of business store. They had their bin shelving for sale. Thick wire - 1/2 inch gaps, four feet long - 18" wide 4 inch high front and backs. We bought 8, used zip ties to hold them together and then inserted two levels. Hubby made some ramps that had to be redone a few times, He made a top for it and we set it on an old table.
We spent less than $40 including some new ductwork to provide a tunnel to the litter box (which many people wouldn't bother doing).
Creativity and a bit of time... which is harder once you have the ferrets at home.
I agree with Tressie though. The pet store should have known better and I would take it back - IF you bought the ferret at the same store.

I bought him off a lady in the next town from me. She said her kids owned him and just got tired of him so she sold him 2 me. He came with a SMALL rabbit cage and hamster dishes homemade small hammock and a broken littler box.. Me and my family just say we saved him..where he was to was a bad home.. but i got a cage custom made by my dad and boyfriend so i can use that now..
