For a list of ferret friendly/knowledgeable veterinary clinics throughout Atlantic Canada check out our website: www.flsatlanticcanada.org/ferretfriendlyveterinaryclinicsDistemper is mandatory at least once every three years, rabies less so unless you take them outside a lot. Check to make sure the clinic has the right vaccine for ferrets (Distemper - Purevax Ferret Distemper by Merial and Imrab3® (Merial) the only SAFE rabies vaccine for ferrets. Ask whether they pre-dose with Benadryl to reduce likelihood of a reaction. If you decide to have both distemper and rabies done - separate them by a couple of weeks - again to reduce the likelihood of a reaction. Because a reaction is a risk the following guidelines should be followed: Be aware of the signs of an anaphylactic reaction in ferrets: sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhea, weakness (ferret becomes limp), pale or bluish gums. Remain at your veterinarian's office at least 30-60 minutes after the vaccination so your ferret can be monitored for any reaction. These reactions can be life-threatening, and need to be treated immediately. Since there could be a delayed reaction, monitor your ferret closely for 24 hours after the vaccination. Schedule the vaccination so that you or someone else will be able to monitor your ferret during this time. .
Be sure veterinary care will be available to you for 24 hours after the vaccination. Know the emergency phone number for your veterinarian and/or emergency clinic in the event your ferret would have a reaction and need immediate attention.

PS - for specialized care you may have to bring them to Halifax to see Dr. Benoit.

Honestly there aren't many ferret knowledgeable vets in Moncton. I moved here almost a year ago and I've had the hardest time finding a vet. I am currently taking mine to see Dr. Mathers at Maritime Animal Hospital. They're not experts, but they know enough. For complicated issues, I take mine to Halifax to see Dr. Benoit, or have Dr. Mathers consult with him over the phone.

Yes, I have had mine vaccinated for Distemper there. I'm not sure about rabies though, if you vaccinate for that too.

I always deal with Dr. Chuck Abbate in quispamsis for my ferrets I am about a 25 minute drive but he is super with the ferrets. I know it is a fair drive from Moncton but if you are ever that way I highly recommend him!

I know it is a fair drive from Moncton but if you are ever that way I highly recommend him! Same here, that's where I go too, He is awesome with ferrets and for me that clinic is a two minute walk for me which is great since I don't drive and hubby works and cant always drive me. I highly recommend him too, there have been times where they have been completely full for appointments but if I express my concerns on the phone they always made sure there is room to squeeze me in there ASAP so my ferret gets looks at, Other vets I have dealt with in the past I actually had to wait days to get my pet looked at and as petkeeper said, he is great with the ferrets...he even keeps some beautiful female ferrets right out in the waiting room..Very ferret friendly animal hospital.
