Maybe its a scab, a flea bite or something, but there's also a possibility that Baby has a skin tumor / mast cell tumor. I can't see very well on the photo but here's the info on skin tumor (Mast Cell Tumor) www.afip.org/consultation/vetpath/ferrets/Mast/mastcell.htmlI suggest you to take him to the vet monday so a biopsy can be done. Try to contact Tressie, I'm sure she can help you : flsac@live.com Good luck & hope Baby will be alright -xox-

Christina,
I've also emailed you this message....
Until you can get him to the vet, dab the wound/lesion with hydrogen peroxide pharmacy grade a couple of times a day. If it bubbles up it means there is some infection there. But don't stress about the bubbles, it means the solution is killing off the bacteria that's there.
It could be an injury or it could be a skin tumor. Mast cell tumors are quite common in ferrets and are EXTREMELY itchy so ferrets will scratch them until they bleed. There are other kinds of skin tumors. All are pretty well cured once removed.
If it is an injury of some sort the vet can give you a topical antibiotic to apply to it. A cut would be a superficial injury although can certainly be nasty and become infected. I would be more worried if it was a puncture wound of some sort. However, you say his behaviour is normal.
Keep those nails trimmed as well so he doesn't keep opening it.
You did exactly what you should have by cleaning it and cutting the hair around it.
He should be fine over the weekend until you can get him to the vet. Keep doing what you have been, that is, keeping it as clean as possible and dabbing some hydrogen peroxide on it.
Let us know what the vet says.
Tressie

Better to be overly cautious because these little critters can develop so many illnesses, some totally unexpected.
Cannoli had what looked like a gash on the top of his head about a year and a half ago. I took him to see my vet, Dr. Benoit at the time. who examined it carefully and said he must have hit his head on something and gave me some antibiotic cream for it.
Well after 2 months it hadn't healed!! So back I went to the vet and he said he must be re-injuring himself. I had already watched him closely to see where he might be hitting his head and could not for the love of Pete find out how he was doing it. But surmized I must not have figured it out.
Anyway the darn thing would heal a bit and then start bleeding again, so I took him back AGAIN, this time to the new vet Dr. Dibblee. At that point it had been about 4 1/2 months after the 'wound' first appeared. This time Dr. Dibblee suggested removing it and sending it out for a biopsy.
So that's what we did. He had 5 stiches. She removed all of it plus a little extra at the margins (thank the goddess).
Pathology results came back - it was a low-grade hemingiosarcoma! VERY RARE in ferrets, rarer still on the skin. They generally appear internally and will cause a fatal hemorrhage. However, on the skin if removed in the early stages they are cured.
Lesson in all of this. It pays to be overly concerned and super vigilant. If I had accepted that he was just whacking his head on something and not kept pursuing it with the vets, he may not be alive today.
