Fawkes trembled with excitement, his dark eyes glowing with love and happiness.
“My brudder Fred be kumin,” he whispered to Tiramisu.
“Dey be here soon,” Chester, the Bridge Greeter told the little dark sable ferret standing at his side.
Fred passed from his mother’s arms to the waiting angel.
He looked at the faces of his beloved human parents and dooked a soft good-bye.
“Tank U Mama and Papa, I luvs U.”
The angel scooped up the large cinnamon ferret and held him gently.
“I think there is someone who is very excited to see you in your new home,’ she smiled at the furry bundle she carried.
Fred felt a mixture of happiness and sadness. Sadness to leave his little sister Ginny. Sadness to leave his human parents who had given him so much love and caring.
At the same time he felt great happiness at the thought of being reunited with his little brother Fawkes.
A great sigh shuddered his body as all the emotions washed over him.
“Hey – der be Furtone over der?” he asked the angel.
“Lots – there is a garden of Ferretone blossoms just for the ferrets who live in Rainbow Bridge,” the angel told him.
With that thought Fred brightened.
The journey to the doctor had been long and he was very, very tired. But he felt himself wrapped in his Mama’s love and that made him feel better.
“Whur be Fred’s wings?” Fawkes poked his nose into Tiramisu.
“Chester gots dem,” Tiramisu motioned in Chester’s direction.
Sure enough the magnificent Silver Champagne ferret held them like the treasure they were.
The wings shimmered with moonlight sparks gathered from the ocean’s waves. They smelled of fresh Newfoundland forests. Blues and greens woven together in iridescent patterns graced the wings.
Fawkes heart quickened as he spied the speck in the distance quickly approaching.
Fred watched from his perch in the angel’s arms as the Rainbow Bridge came into focus.
It was more beautiful than he could have imagined, with lush green meadows, resplendent gardens and pockets of trees.
The angel touched down lightly and deposited her passenger onto the bridge.
Fawkes couldn’t wait another second and joyfully leapt onto Fred as the fur brothers were reunited.
Chester warmly greeted the newest arrival to Rainbow Bridge while placing the resplendent wings between Fred’s shoulders.
Fawkes eagerly explained that the wings would now become a part of the ferret forever.
He chittered excitedly telling Fred that he had spent the day preparing the hammock they would share and between war dances led Fred to his new home.
“He be waitin a long time for his brudder to kum,” Tiramisu nodded to her tall companion.
“I tink dey gonna be OK,” Chester winked at her and turned to watch as the pair made their way down the tree-lined path..
“Dat angel said der be Furtone bwossums here….” sniffing the air, Fred commented to Fawkes as they passed some flowers.
Fawkes paused for a moment, shut his eyes tight and whispered, “He be OK Mama, he be wif me now, I takes kar of him.” The message fluttered to his mother’s aching heart.
