They say that ferrets don't like the sound of squeaky toys ; they only come to that sound because it reminds them of a prey or a ferret in distress. However, I sometimes heard some squeak squeak coming from my ferrets room and its very cute to see Demon and Johnny playing with some squeaky toys and making them squeak ! So I am a bit confused, to ferrets hate this sound or not ? This morning they were playing with their Tic tac toe blanket and a Skineeezz (its a stuffing free dog toy with 2 squeakers - so its stronger than most squeaky dog toys). I heard some squeak squeak and I've seen Johnny making the skineeezz squeaks by the head and Demon in the toc tac toe blanket, grabing the toy by the tail, where's the other squeaker. What do you think of it ? Were they just looking where the "prey" was ?

Well one thing about ferrets for certain - they are individuals. In general ferrets do not like the sound of squeaky toys. But all are capable of learning new associations. It could be mock hunting they are engaging in or it might be simply good old fashioned fun Tressie

TayLa has 7 squeeky toys (see photo). It appears that TayLa believes they are baby ferrets. Each one of the 7 squeeky toys are carefully picked up by TayLa and carried to a place of security (hidey hole). If I take TayLa for a long walk down the street and squeek one of her blue baby toys, TayLa will gently pick up the squeeky toy in her mouth and run all the way back up the street, down the driveway, into garage, up the stairs, down the hall way, through the kitchen, into the living room and up into the comfort and security of underneath the cushions in the sofa...TayLa will then return from the living room, through the kitchen, down the hall way, down the stairs, through the garage, up the driveway looking for another squeeky baby toy and given another squeeky baby toy she will again return the same proceedure until all the 7 squeeky baby toys are safe and securely put away. TayLa will periodically move the squeeky baby toys through out the house during the week. TayLa doesn't leave the squeeky baby toys in one location for very long and enjoys the adventures of finding them as we move them from place to place for her to find. TayLa will also grunt at the baby toys as a mother ferret would be scolding her little one. This is great therapy for TayLa and us as well. TayLa only is interested in these blue dog bone shape toys. We did notice the BFF ferrets do the same proceedure with there babies. They will move them from one burrow to another burrow. Abby our other ferret girl is deaf, so, squeeky toys don't interest Abby. TayLa has a very high interest in all kinds squeeks....even the squeek of the water fawcet will set her off. i've never been sure if it's hate or love either but i find it's helpful to train them to come to the sound( like squeak it a bunch then when the come to check it out give the a treat) makes it easier if one is mia or heaven forbid gets out one of my ferret got in the heating ducts in the wall( she snuck out of her room and it only took he seconds to find trouble) this was the only way i could get her out

Out of the two of my two ferrets, only one hates/likes squeaky toys... Jackie will go CRAZY trying to bite my dog if she is playing with a squeaky toy near by while she is out running around playing... but when she is in her cage, she has a Zebra stuffed toy that has a squeaker in it and she squeaks that in the cage herself and seems like it isnt bothing her at all.. i find that it's weird how she sometimes hates it and sometimes likes it.. but what you said Tressie, about "mock hunting" seems about right when 'I' think about it...

I think she doesn't like your dog to play with squeaky toys because she believes all the squeaky toys are hers ? Demon was hissing at us if we were squeaking a toy and not giving him the toy right away. However, he loved playing with his squeaky squirrels by his own and make them squeak. Same thing with Johnny. He seems to be very mad if we are squeaking one of his toy, but will make them squeak himself when he's in his room. The only ferret I know who doesn't care about squeaky toys is Cujo. We've tried to call him with a squeaky toy when he was in another room, but he didn't come. I would say he is deaf. However, he loves toys and he loves playing with them.
