The climate in the UK for the most part is not as extreme as here. Many ferrets in the UK are cross-bred with polecats, which makes for a hardier breed. Outdoor hutches for ferrets are quite normal in the UK. A small minority are kept indoors but most live in outside hutches, which if set up correctly, and given the British climate are suitable homes for ferrets. They aren't left outside but taken out to play, much like we take ours out of their cages. There are ferrets who are kept as animal companions and there are ferrets who are used for 'ferreting', that is, hunting rabbits, which is illegal in Canada. Different culture, different standards. Here is a link to an excellent article by Bob Church on an English couples rescue facility for ferrets: www.smallanimalchannel.com/ferrets-magazine/road-with-bob/one-british-couple-and-ferrets.aspxYou can see that they are treated very well indeed!
