My ferrets spend most of their time out of the cage but when I put them back in it every night before i go to bed I put them back in..This is the issue i have..Loki does not handle having to go back in that cage very well..First he starts pacing back and fourth..up and down the ramp, then he goes to the bars and sicks his little arms out like he is doing a doggy paddle motion..when that don't work, he then gets really destructive, he literally throws his food dish across the cage with his head spilling the food everywhere, he will do this over and over again and then he goes to the litter pan and digs hard..the pellets go flying and are even landing on the outside of the cage..sometimes he will even rip the litter pan off of the bars and he will thrash that all over the cage..This is especially frustrating because I always give the cage, litter pan etc a thorough cleaning before I put them in there at night and he completely totals it on me and makes me feel like the time i take each night to make the cage a nice home for them was done in vain. I never give in and let him out when he has these tantrums and as for his sisters they curl right up and go to sleep as soon as they are in there..but Loki has a lot of trouble accepting that it is bed time, he is so gentle and happy when he is outside the cage, but soon as he goes in there he causes utter havoc..why does he do this when his sister's don't? Is it because he spends so much time outside the cage?? Should I start limiting the amount of time he spends outside of the cage??

Ferrets are individuals - some are more 'wired' than others. And some are more stubborn. This is actually not an uncommon problem. I solved that problem early on by always put a saucer with water and Ferretone sprinkled on top into the cage when I put my babies to bed for the night. They end up looking forward to going to bed Tressie

Ferretone is a supplement that is used as a treat for things like cutting nails (put on tummy), as a distraction for needle pricks, blood glucose checks, etc.
The odd ferret doesn't like it but most LOVE the taste of it and so it can be used as a bribe or distraction or treat.
They should not get more than 20 drops a day but a little goes a long way and a couple of drops in food, medicine (check with vet to make sure its not contraindicated) or water work well. Too much and they can get Vitamin A toxicity.
It contains the following ingredients: Soybean Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Lecithin, Wheat Germ Oil, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Mono and Diglycerides, BHT and Propyl Paraben (as preservatives
Many people mix it half/half with high grade olive oil.

Pets Unlimited carries it or most pet stores that sell ferrets. You can also order it on-line from the ferret supplier outlets like Ferret.com, Ferret.Depot, etc.

Oh, My Loki still is a very good boy..its just when he has to go back in his cage is when he acts out, other than that he is the best acting ferret I have ever met, never gets into any kind of trouble..unlike his sisters lol, he is just a big sookie baby

If you can't get ferretone, here is a suggestion from my vet : flax oil as it contains omega 3. My ferrets love it and it is good for them. As with ferretone you just give a small amount. I buy it at the health foods store. It comes in a bottle which you store in the fridge.
