I am so frustrated and wish i could do something....I went to Pets Unlimited and was mortified to find 2 cute and cuddly ferrets behind glass with a bed full of pine shavings with only a corner pottie a dirty water bowl with food in it and shavings and a igloo to sleep in. I knocked on the door to the person working in that section I asked him if he knew that pine shavings were not good for ferrets and told him you are selling them for $249.99 plus Tax and that people buying not knowing would assume this was ok and not know the dangers that they have already been put in (respitory issues) i then put his attention to right outside where these cute and cuddly ferrets were to a beautiful 3 level ferret nation cage set up with locks so no one could steal a CAT hmmmmm ok I said let me get this straight you put ferrets behind glass with shavings and you put a cat in the ferret nation cage he said that the company was cheap and if it was up to him he would have towls in with the ferrets ...him still not realizing that the ferrets should be in the ferret cage i am soooooooooo angry i asked why cant they at least use comfy cozy bedding instead he said the company cant afford it hmmmmm i said but the skinny pigs in another glass confinment had comfy cozy bedding and they poop everywhere and that it would need to be changed way more frequent he turned red and had no answers for me what can i do? its not right they have no hammocks they have no play time they have no clean water or proper living conditions these companys need to get education on ferrets i have three furbabies Kusco,Gismo and Isabella i love them sooooooo much they have everything they need i wish i could help these poor furbabies at the pet stores does anyone know if there is something that can be done?

I learned 3 years ago that , no matter what you tell them, no matter how hard you try, even if you speak with the manager on duty or the manager himself .. Even if they tell you "ah ok ! Thanks for you concerns, we will try to change that and improve the quality of our animals" ... The truth is, pet stores don't care and never gonna care. Just as much as BYB don't really care (or are very clueless about what they are doing to their own animals) about the pets they have for sale .. Pets Unlimited have stopped selling puppies most likely because people have been boycoting them for so many years, trying to promote puppy mills awarness. Its a good start. I seriously hope one day, no pets will ever be on sale in a window or cage .. I seriously think that if everyone would have been a REAL REPUTABLE breeder, someone that does try to "improve the breed", someone that knows the breed, what to feed them, how to take care for them, that does have a vet around if complication arrives, someone that ask the potential new pet parents questions to make sure they are ready for that specific pet .. Rescue shelters and SPCA would not exist today .. Unfortunately, we are not in a perfect world .. Keep trying to educate people .. especially people outside and your friends that ask you questions about ferrets .. Because they might be the one thinking about getting a ferret .. and if they listen to the pet store, they are most likely to do a big mistake .. Educate, educate, educate ! Never give up ! Ferrets (and other animals) need us ! Help those that cannot speak for themselves ! & don't buy ANYTHING at pet stores until they get the message : pets are not objects !

I totally agree, we got our youngest Sisko at the pet store this summer at 6 months old, he must have been poked at and teased a lot because even after being in a loving home for over 6 months he is still really jumpy and not 100% trusting. It's a shame that they have to live like that at the store.

I would ask to speak directly with the store manager and follow-up on doing that via phone call. Or get an email address and make certain to copy the head office.
Take a diplomatic approach and say that you are extremely concerned because...... and state all that you have found. Stress that you believe the manager sincerely cares about the animals, and sick animals are not likely to sell well blah, blah, blah.
While I agree that it is extremely frustrating, doing nothing is condoning the conditions. If enough people complain, changes do happen even if they are small to begin with.
I have enlisted friends in my area who go into the store and make comments to the manager about the appalling conditions, etc.. One of my friends goes in and takes pictures and explains to staff that he is recording the conditions of the animals.....
Many pet store chains have stopped carrying specific species if enough people complain.
Don't give up!
Squeaky wheels are not ignored!

Which Pets Unlimited are you talking about? I work at the one on Mountain road in Moncton, and I own two ferrets and another girl that works there has three of her own. Their water is changed 4-5 times a day and so is their food. We also DO NOT use pine shavings. If customers were not bugging employees to hold the animals as a petting zoo then the animals would be changed ten times a day. There are two people scheduled to clean/feed all day long. I also agree that having animals locked away in cages is awful but I wouldnt have my two beautiful girls had they not been there

Pets Unlimited's mission is to sell ferrets - get them out the door, to order more and repeat the cycle. They never will be overly concerned about the well being/care of the ferrets. Sad but true, their in the busness to sell, not educate.
