Yay !! You can put your ferret for sale on kijiji or give him away ! You can no longer care for him ? Find a new home on kijiji ! The problem is .. there's two kind of people looking for pets on those kind of sites : 1- People that would like to give a pet a secon chance, a new/better life. I don't worry that if there's any health/behaviour problems, they will not give up and try the best they can to take care for this animal. 2- People that would like to have a pet for free or for a very low price because they do not want to "put money in a pet". Now .. I worry about the fact that if they adopt a 6 years old free ferret on kijiji, they will not take him to the vet, give him the cheapest cat/dog foods they can find and not take really good care. I've tried to put some adds on kijiji about "before getting a pet", what to consider. I've put one for dogs, cats and ferrets in (other pets for sale). Many people replied to me saying they liked the message and changed their mind. I was very glad. Then kijiji removed my add saying I can't post "comments" on their site. Well .. thanks kijiji to promote pets welfare !? That's making me so angry ..

Hey Annik, sadly its not just Kijiji, its all kinds of other online classified sites, then there is the buyer Flyer, bulletin ads etc. I have gotten pets from these kind of ads but I always thought things through and my adoptions were for the long haul. I seen some psycho looking for a puppy on Kijiji and a few weeks later she had put a new ad up trying to find a new home for the puppy she got...Bet she didn't expect the chewing or mistakes made on the floor..it sickened me, I hate that!! people get a puppy and end up finding a new home for it because they can not deal with puppy behavior..I mean what do they expect?? a statue that just sits there and does nothing??? What I fear most are the ferret ads I see on there because soooo many people want them yet have no clue about how high maintenanced they are and how it is way different to care for than other types of pets. I especially worry about the ferrets I see on there..did you know that there is yet more free ferrets on Kijiji..I seen it in the Moncton branch..Hope to god those ferrets get a proper home and not adopted by someone who seen some in the pet store before and thought they were cute.
Who can you write in and complain about Kijiji's pet policy?? I feel like writing them and venting out our frustrations about how the site basically promotes animal neglience..and it does if it removed your ads you posted..also I hate that those puppy mill people get free advertising..That big puppymill bust in Bathurst a few months back?? they were actually caught through their Kijiji ads. I was one of the people who reported them..Kijiji wouldn't do nothing until enough of us started complaining..and once the SPCA got involved..those ads were suddenly taken off even though many of us reported those ads prior.

Unfortunately there are more other kinds of people looking for ferrets on places like kijiji or craigs list.
Last year there was a woman looking for ferrets and was buying them up, also getting them from shelters, had actually applied to adopt a ferret from us. However, when I called her number it didn't exist, her address didn't exist, etc. Turns out to be someone who was getting ferrets for really inexpensive amounts, sick and old ones as well - and then turning around and selling them for hundreds of dollars. She travelled across Canada doing this and I tracked her activity to Ferret Aid in Toronto (i.e., she had contacted them) - she claimed in an email to me that she had an aunt who worked with them (UNTRUE) and to the west coast. I reported her to the RCMP.
Another kind of nefarious person is someone who buys them for dog fights. And the last type of person I have heard about buys them as food for snakes.
In all these instances people have actually investigated and found this to be true. If any of you belong to the FML people post occasionally about their personal experiences in rescuing such ferrets.
And then I had an adoption application from a woman who had received two ferrets as a rehome from someone who should have known better. She was looking for another ferret. She described their living arrangements, their chronic flea infestation, feeding them chocolate donuts for breakfast every morning when she got her Tim Horton's coffee, etc. She was outraged when I denied her application!
You know some people complain about how strict we are with screening adoption applicants but there are very good reasons for this.
I can only hope that the 6 year-old went to a good home with an experienced ferret person.

There's another free ferret (4 years old) in the Bathurst area I think. I really feel sorry for this poor ferret You know Tressie, some people really make me sick ! & some people think that I'm crazy when I talk about all the grooming (nails, ears, teeth, brushing and cleaning the cage, the litter box and the bedding). But I know my ferrets feel happy in a clean room So I don't really care of what people think or say about me haha But I feel really sorry for all the poor ferrets out there that are always in their cage, no vet visits, no health care, no grooming, no love, no attention Thats not what they deserve My boyfriend and I really believe that when you buy/adopt a pet, is supposed to be forever. Its like a furry kid, and you have to take good care of them .. We are living in a cruel world my friends But I'm glad to chat in this forum and see that there's still good people on this earth .. Thank you, God ! Unfortunately, there's still too much ferrets and other pets waiting for a good home

Atleast our ferrets are well cared for unlike the other ferret owners you speak of..like the one's who do not know what like is like outside the cage and don't even get to eat actual ferret food. It really pisses me off that a large majority of people are adopting ferrets and don't have the slightest clue about their needs and don't even take the time to even find out what those needs are. This really upset me, a few days ago a friend of ours brought his girlfriend over and she went over to my ferret cage where they were sound asleep and she was like "EWWW!! you have those?" and i was "like yeah whats wrong with them??" and then she went on to tell me that her sister used to have some and how vicious they were so I asked if her sister's ferrets ever got to spend time out of the cage and she was like "no, they would attack you as soon as they got out" and then she went on to describe the way those ferrets would attack..she described the weasel war dance!!! That is a invitation to play!! I explained to her that they were not attacking but they do that when they are being friendly and want to play..but she insisted they were being aggressive..Really pissed me off to hear about those poor babies spending their life in a cage because the people around them were to ignorant and ill informed about them. I even asked her to hold one of my sleeping babies just to show her that they are not vicious little monsters but she wouldn't even do that..I was pretty offended to be honest..I felt like my ferrets(and all ferrets) were on trial and it was a unfair trial at that. I hate the attitudes people have regarding them..especially when people will not listen to the truth regarding them and continue to spew out those untrue and disgusting myths even though they know nothing about them at all!!!

Yup - I know how you feel. I have gradually dropped people from my life who have negative attitudes about ferrets. I got a call from someone I dated ages ago the other day and when I told him I had ferrets - his comment was "Those miserable weasels." I made it very clear to him that he just guaranteed I would not be seeing him again.
If anyone sees an ad like that again, please email me right away with the link so that I can contact them. We are an Atlantic wide rescue and will take ferrets from anywhere in Atlantic Canada. We have two foster homes in NB and one in NL as well as here in NS and would take them.

Tressie Wow, I would of been quite pissed too. Like you Tressie I myself have cut out some people in my life over their views about my ferrets..My neighbors told a friend of mine to do them a favor and go throw my ferrets in the dumpster because they are tired of having to look at them(I have them out in the yard everyday)..This was months ago and I have not talked to them since and when they say hello I just walk past them without uttering a word, and these are people who I have spoken to on a daily basis. Oh.. I forgot to mention and I really should of but it slipped my mind until now, I just want to say I hope all of you are being super careful about who you are buying from on Kijiji if you are getting anything off that site..I am giving this warning because a few weeks back this guy seen a ad for a large flat screen asking 3500, He sent a e-mail and it was arranged for him to go and get it (Duke Street, Saint John) when he arrived the people he was to buy it from were in the yard waiting for him..when he asked to go in and see the TV a 17 year old went flying at him stabbed him in the neck and he was beaten badly, they demanded all of his money, he threw it at them and ran to a neighboring house looking for help..They did get the people who done this(crack/meth heads I would assume) but still I am sure there are more out there just like them. its very scary to think about who you may be buying from or who is buying off you on those sites. I would suggest that if your going to buy something from someone on one of those sites, meet them at a public place..somewhere like a gas station with security cameras and never go alone..Its really scary about what some others are using that site for. I love Kijiji myself and got some really good deals on stuff but after reading that story about that poor man, I am going to be very vigilant when or if I ever buy from there again.

Your right about people giving their ferrets away on kijiji. People will some will give them away because they do not to pay to get them healthy. I took in 1 that I knew that would not find a good home. She was sick and was on the brink of death. I got her to a vet and with her help and a lot of work I save her and now doing well. She was older than most ferrets you would see and had been feed a very poor diet. Now nothing but the best. If I did not act quickly that poor ferret could have gone to some one else who would not know what to do or spend the money and time that I did to save her life. Just be aware that some of these ferrets on kijiji might need help and we need to move fast to help them. Clark

Hi Clark,
Welcome to our message board!
One lucky fuzzbutt to have found you!
What is her name? Would love to see pics of her if you wish to post a few here.
Using photobucket is the easiest way to post pics. Just copy the IMAGE link from photobucket and paste it into your message. Sometimes the photos are too large and may need to be reduced on photobucket first.

It is true people on these sites giving ferrets away to homes that have no idea what is involved with owning a ferret is a large problem The other large problem is the people looking to find there ferret(s) a good home for the low low price of $200-$300 for one $300-$400 for a pair the problem is that people who are prepared to rescue a ferret are not always able to pay those prices to give the animal a good home knowing full well the care cost and vet bill costs the ferrets being sold will need immediately after purchase because of there neglect. I understand that the people selling them wish to recoup some of the cost of the purchase they made 6 months to a year ago without properly researching what is involved with ferret ownership
there was an ad on Kijiji not a week ago that was for 2 ferrets a bonded pair selling to a good home for $300 would like them to stay together but if not $150 each. . . It made me so mad you dont do that to ferrets they can become depressed and even die if separated from there companion I messaged her and the add has since disappeared not sure if she reconsidered it or sold them but its just wrong
I think it is time we use the Kijiji site for good and post a free add under the Animal, pet services category letting people know FLSAC is an option for those who are not able or are unwilling to take care of there ferrets

Warmest Welcome to our message board! We have in fact, posted ads on Kijiji since we were registered as a rescue. Our board members regularly scan kijiji and notify people about the services we offer, including that people have the option to surrender ferrets into our care. We also let people know that pairs shouldn't be separated, etc. Sometimes people take us up on the offer. Sometimes people ignore the offer. Sometimes they are grateful for the information, other times, resentful. Some remove the ads and we never hear from them, unsure whether they kept the ferrets or perhaps found homes for them. Some people even get angry that we've contacted them. It is an ongoing process to continue educating people. I have a different view on people selling their ferrets to recoup cost of purchase - in my experience, those who genuinely care about the welfare of their ferrets are more interested in finding them a good home than recouping the purchase price. Those who ask an outrageous price, claiming they spend x amount of dollars, blah, blah, blah - are NOT concerned with the welfare of the animal but more with making a buck! Our adoption fees are generally $100.00 per ferret, depending on health and age. This doesn't even cover the cost of a veterinary health check and vaccination. Our fees are a good gauge of what would be considered a fair asking price. So what would be a reasonable amount to pay for a ferret on kijiji? One of our board members bought an older ferret for $50.00 on Kijiji a few months ago. I bought one under a year old for $100.00 last year. Whereas, 2 1/2 years ago, before our rescue organization was in place, I paid $200.00 for a ferret 1 1/2 years old on Kijiji. The asking prices were always higher, however, as already stated those who genuinely care about the ferrets are oftentimes willing to negotiate on the price. On the other hand several years ago - it cost me $1000.00 to adopt ferrets from a shelter in Massachusetts. That wasn't the adoption fee but the cost of going there and back. I made that trip on three separate occasions, specifically to get the ferrets. So that is $3000.00 for 5 ferrets in total However, at the time I felt strongly about adopting from a shelter as opposed to buying a ferret from a pet store, that is was worth making the trip to me. Lots to think about when 'paying' for a ferret. If someone sees a ferret on Kijiji and believes he/she can provide a good home for the ferret, including ensuring the ferret receives ongoing veterinary care - then I would suggest to make an offer to the seller. And not too worry - FLSAC does its job of monitoring the ads on Kijiji. However, we always appreciate being notified of new ads Tressie Tressie

Thank you for letting us know about this organization. I've had a look at their website and am impressed, however, do agree that they handle mostly exotic herbivores and birds.
Therefore, I wrote them and asked them to refer ferrets or questions about ferret to us.

Memorials is a place to honour a beloved fuzzkid who has died.
If you would like to share examples of how people may have mistreated a ferret a good place to post it to is General or Ferret Care.
I have to agree that people are capable of some horrific behaviours towards animals. I am angered, horrified and deeply saddened when I hear these stories.
I was called Thursday night by a couple walking their dogs in Point Pleasant Park. Someone had abandoned a ferret at the park in a rabbit cage, which had been knocked over and she was outside of the cage running back and forth in a panic, terrified.
When I got there they had put her back into the filthy cage to keep her safe. They told me she was chilled because she was shaking so badly. Well she was frightened not cold.
At least who ever abandoned her had put her in a public park that gets lots of traffic and had put her in a cage rather than setting her free in the park, which would have meant death for her.
She will be available soon for adoption once she has a health check.

One was one that i rescued and owned myself and the other was supposed to be my first ferret when i was fourteen but they killed it before letting me take it.(Whats worse is that within weeks of that they got a puppy and were beating on the dog also and we ended up rescuing the dog(She is still living happilly with my mother who refuses to let me take her as she is her baby)

I get that all the time to. At work i talk about my ferret alot and people are always asking me question(I find their more questions than rude remarks though). Like Dont they stink, I hear they bite alot etc etc. Then i have to explain to them stuff like if you clean them, dont wash them every week to remove their natural oils and feed them properly they smell nice actually(I found my late adrenal ferret smelt like chocolate) And that most people who think ferrets are aggressive just dont know the ferret posturing, and then have to go on to explain what the war dance looks like and go on about play posturing and explain about the biting and how baby ferrets have tougher skin etc and its something you can break them of. Usually by the end of the talk you end up with two kinds of people, People who found it really interesting and have a new respect of ferrets and the others who are close minded and just shrug and still think their stinky and aggressive(We just dont talk to those guys afterwards ) People know better than to do that kind ignorant intolerance stuff around me. Ive been involved wit h rescues of some sort since i was 8(My grandma and me would be the ones that people would drop off pregnant cats to in our little small country town and we would find homes for them). I used to be made fun of in middle school because i actually liked and cared about animals.
